“Here’s a gentle smile.”

A few weeks ago, my friends and I journeyed to Cocoa Beach.

This was an epic journey, not because it was particularly long, but because it was particularly fun, and it was the second time that we’ve done so. We’re endeavoring to make it a new tradition.

Now, my group of friends is slightly ridiculous, so whenever we have such epic undertaking, we inevitably leave with a phrase or a few that are randomly thrown out for days, or weeks afterward. For instance, after our Spring Break cruise, I frequently heard “COCOLOCO!”, that someone was “dead to us,” and questions of whether or not something was “a joke right now.”

So it was entirely expected that something new would be picked up on this time around.

We spent the day at the beach drinking frolicking, continued into the evening, and wound up at one of my favorite Cocoa establishments for dinner, drinks, and dancing: Fishlips.

(Sidenote: David the waiter? You are awful. That pretty much sums it up)

On the way in several of my friends noticed a lovely white flowered arch. Of course, this necessitated family-style photos.

The hostess was recruited to be the “sister,” but not before she told the boys to give her a “gentle smile.”

ZING. Ladies and gentlemen, we have phrase lift-off.

This prompted even more photo-taking. We all had to practice our gentle smiles.

gentle smile, you see has the ability to either be serenely happy…

…Supremely sarcastic (how mine usually comes off… see below), or creepy in a possessed doll kind of way (Sometimes I cannot decide if someone is creepy or serene. I do not know what that says about my judgement skills) I’m sure there’s a fourth category, because I’m not sure what kind of smile you’d call my friend Chris’s smile here:

Maybe we could call it “Oh-dear-Grandma’s-so-glad-to-see-you.”

At any rate the night went on, we danced it away, and both gentle and real smiles abounded.

And well… they still do.
